●We figured the same thing when we were at the sighting, and it very well may have been the case that it was old age. What we do know is that this lion pride, the Paradise Pride on the Masai Mara became hippo killing specialists. But they killed them on land. They were only capable of killing hippos because the pride had 5 fully grown male lions in it, which is very rare. One lion pride in Botswana grew so powerful they have been documented killing adolescent elephants. Which is truly amazing!
