Here's a relatively simple method to make ferrofluid, a very interesting liquid that responds to magnetic fields. You'll need the following chemicals: 20mL 1.5M FeCl3 solution 10mL 1.5M FeCl2 solution

●I guess my point is that it doesn't seem to do a very good job. The regular gold magnets that allow you to pick up and drop sand do a better job separating the black sand from the blond sand. You still have lots of blond mixed in with the black. Check out the you tube video that shows how to use a few different containers and to drop and redrop the sand to get it really clean.
