Paul Potts is good without a mike also, but seeing as Pavarotti had several mikes when he sang in concerts I don't think people will mind.

Simon talks about his recollection of Paul Potts' audition for "Britain's Got Talent"
●People tend to criticize him because he'd sung in an opera and had a masterclass with Luciano Pavarotti before auditioning, but they don't know the fact. He paid a ridiculous amount of money to study that one time with Pavarotti and he paid to be in the opera. It's like being in an amateur musical production. You have to pay to be in it, you don't get paid. It was his hobby and he made a career out of it.
