●i have read the book and agree with the comment about what were obrien s real experience as a combat infrantryman..his discussion of luck and how it was viewed was true to life.we prayed to tonkalinia the goodess of luck.i really thought everyone did.i have beinggoing to group at the vet center for years and was shocked that no one else had heard of tonkalinia.the book with the admission that it all may not be true was a letdown.the great work done in all the school videos is great tks rugby

●I don't understand. Is this a review of O'Brien's book or a statement about the war? Whatever you have heard soldiers who were in the Vietnam War say about what they encountered is most likely true. However, I have great doubt that O'Brien experienced a lot of what he wrote about. He reminds me of a few men I served with, who took others experiences and claimed them as his own, because he was too embarrassed to admit he had no effective participation. O'Brien's book is an overall disappointment.

Although I disagreed with the gruesome and undirected nature of the Vietnam war, I disagree even more with the response that our returning troops received just because people didn't approve of the war.
