He's understated, but definitely NOT lacking in emotion, he just presents differently. If you listen to Pavarotti first, then Andrea, you realize how lovely this is, & that they are both peerless. Both geniuses. Both masters. Both worthy of adulation and praise for their contributions to Italian opera.

●Yes, Verona is magical, really really beautiful. It was really an experience. Also just watching people and their reaction was interesting. Sitting wasn't comfortable - it was on the stone, and I miscalculated the amount of money I needed and didn't have any left to rent a pillow. Still well worth it. It was La Gioconda. I didn't get to hear Pavarotti at the Met, my other time was in Chicago in Rigoletto, also in Avery Fisher Hall in "Pavarotti Plus" concert.
●Arena di Verona must be a great place for opera - the entire Il Veneto is magical, Venezia :-) I spent some time in Italy, never had a chance to run up to Verona, Modena or to Milano, La Scala, too many other "distractions". I did attend some performances at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, but no Pavarotti - that was at the MET :-)
●Very--very true! For a prime example, consider those rock/pop icons who literally screamed out the voice, ie, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Whitney Houston, and others. Improper technique is a voice killer no matter the genre and proper technique can only be learned with several years of intense training!
●No offense taken here either. As a matter of fact, I consider babystinky a friend; as well as, a Pavarotti lover. We both admire the man and his talent.
●Another thing you don't understand is that lack of amplification forces singers to learn the technique that is safest for the throat muscles and the vocal cords. This is why opera singers' careers on the average are longer than that of pop singers. The singers who aren't able to project are likely to not be able to survive the amount of singing required in a full opera, they'll probably have no voice left by the end of the performance. Also, operas are much more difficult than a few arias.
●I didn't intend to be rude, if I was so, I apologize. All opera theaters are supposed to have good acoustics, so if Covent Garden improved its acoustics it's not the same as amplification. The singers are still required to project and be heard over the orchestra.Projection is part of vocal technique. If somebody's voice is too small for opera, there are other genres which could use beautiful voices e.g. art song which only requires projection over the piano no orchestra, musical theater, and pop
●I'd imagine there are many poor students who spent their money on cheapest tickets to opera and concerts. it's a myth that opera is only for the rich. For me, it was an opera not a concert. I was doing a study abroad course in Perugia (my minor was Italian; I save my scholarship and took a student loan to go to Italy). While there I saw an ad about La Gioconda in Arena di Verona with Pavarotti, so I took a trip to Verona. It was quite an experience!
●None of the singers at these tv talent shows sing at the classical music standards - not just because of amplification issue, but also because of lack of technique and artistry. Among younger (under 30) tv talent show contestants there are extremely talented people who could become classical or opera singers in future if they choose to train for it. This isn't the case with older singers. Don't confuse classical crossover with classical - different genres. Classical crossover is closer to pop.
●Just to add: my whole band at the time was converted and hooked on pavarotti as well:) From there I explored more and more the world of opera and have to appreciate the composers and the great singers like /CarusoGigli/Bjorling/Di Stefano/Del Monaco/Corelli

●In a pop yes, definitely. It has no traditions, everyone can do what they want sing as they want. But opera has very old traditions and many rules, if you want to sing opera you should respect them, you should sing what composer wrote, with all marks he made and add something from yourself in your interpretation. This is hard and takes years of trainings on a top of a natural talent. And this is opera aria, so in some way this is opera.
