So now the ball is moving nice and slow and easy-to-hit for his opponent -- who IMMEDIATELY runs up to the table and smashes the ever-loving shit out of it, to take control and start going on the offensive. And then he takes the point.

Notice how the ball change direction when it hit the table. Then recall that the coating of the ping pong bat these guys are using is far less smooth the the table! You have to counter spin the ball to have any control. Counter spinning and tapping is only possible if you are very close to the net.
