I often aksed myself why they -at first- "only" declared PAN PAN because smoke in the cockpit is a very serious problem. I think they underestimated the problem and concentrated on the checklists instead of landing the plane ASAP. When the fire broke into the cockpit, it was to late. But, they did an amazing job to keep the plane in the air so long !
