●I too have been teaching for nearly 40 years and use my classroom as a testing site for my ideas and new products. This particular song was written in 1981 and updated with the hidden letters several years ago.! I really do appreciate your input!!!! I have found over the years that 99% like what I have done and a few would like some changes which I have tried to address.
●As a toddler, I really had no trouble relating "er" to /r/ or "el" to /l/. Once you put words in front of them, they sound it out, and if they recognize the word (as in "lion") they learn exactly what /l/ sounds like. Consonants are not designed to be pronounced by themselves. You are correct, /x/ is either /z/ or /ks/. That is how it is pronounced. Most commonly, it is /ks/, so this is how they should first learn it. Kids might first sound out "fo-eks" but quickly correct to "fox"
●I study Linguistics at UCSD, and plan to go into teaching. Also, I was raised with this song!! :D Phonics is such a rich and complicated field! As children get older and reading becomes more advanced, a move from phonics to complex phonetics, phonemics, and integration with foreign roots will be required. HOWEVER, in the earliest stages of reading, they NEED to relate sounds to letters (phonics). IMHO, this song does just that, beautifully, without conscious effort.
●I don't think speech pathology is for reading. Overall your song is good, young children can absorb a few errors and still figure it out if started early enough (before 5). One reason we have so much trouble with reading is the schools start way too late and drag it out way too long. Children should be reading by three or 4 - they are hard wired to learn it quickly and easily at that age (or younger). But teach q needs a u, ing says "eeng", th, sh, ea "ee, eh" not just individual letter sounds.
●When I was a student teacher my lead teacher taught that xylophone was "ex-ill-a-phone" and this after 30 some years of teaching. Job time doesn't make it right. Obviously the universities are not doing their jobs and in fact, most allow no phonics instruction whatsoever. The dictionaries have reneged on passing on even the correct pronunciation of words. If you say "er ing" for ring u give a 1 syllable word 2 same for "el ion" lion. x does not say "ex" it says z starting or cks elsewhere.
●I am not sure where you are getting your info, but both my phonics songs have been evaluated by English language specialists at California State University in Fullerton and Long Beach. As mentioned above in earlier post, there are several schools of thought on the R sound, so I offer the one you want in my newer video called Apple apple aaa. and is on my youtube site. ●xylaphone starts with the proper sound for x which is z. Words that start with x are few, most are elsewhere and sound like "ks" as in box - it makes more sense to teach the more common sound but if not then at least the correct sound. Also r does not say "er" it says "ruh" as in round and l does not say "el" but "luh" - actually just the first part but for clarity I spelled out the whole syllable. 
●My son is 4 years old now and he loves this song, know this is mostly for babies but as a native spanish speaker attending an american school this has helped him A LOT!! he sings this song all day long. Thank you!!
