●I agree. That makes total sense. I like lenard cohen's voice. He sounds like he's been thru some sh*T. I think the PopIdol contestants lack the same power in their words, because they don't have as much apprieciation for music. It's more or less something that was pushed on to them by their partents. But i also never really enjoyed vocally oriented music. I think the beauty of the human voice lies in it imperfections, while synth notes can always create a more refined melody.
●Range does have its place, but I think that "glory notes" and such can sometimes be a bit over the top and detract from the meaning of a song. I see this way of performing as an example of over-singing. I think in some cases less is more when it comes to vocal acrobatics; this is one reason why I prefer Jeff Buckley's version of the song to Alexandra Burke's.  Hope that makes sense. Cheers!
●I actually see range as being a underapprieciated aspect as well. We don't hear Brittish audiences screaming for Ivan Rebroff. However, the continuous vibratos and chronic melismatic phrasing becomes quite annoying. It was cool in the 90's when Whitney Houston showed us all how effortless it could be, but now it's tired and old. Regardless of what's considered new in England, Viacom (an PopIcon programs) shouldn't be trying to limit the explosion of popular ideology in America.
●I agree with you. Talent seems to be measured by how well a singer can turn one note into numerous ones or by how high/loudly he/she can belt with little consideration being given to originality, passion, or others elements that help make a great artist.
