●VORPAL from EPYX was even faster. Probably made the 1541 the fastest data access drive on the planet, BUT you were limited to 140k and had to specially format the disk. Most later games from EPYX used this and loaded quite quickyl (Winter GAMES, World GAMES, etc).

The 3.5" disk used by the 1581 could store about 800 KB. There are companies like Athana that still make new 5.25" (and even the older 8" disks), so they're not as hard to find as you might think.
●The 1541 was originally intended to be about 5 times faster, in fact, thanks to a hardware shift register, but a hardware bug in the chip forced them to handle the entire shift in software. The fact that the 1541 had its own RAM is what made cartridges like FastLoad possible. (Original speed was about 300 bytes per second; with FastLoad, about 4000 bytes per second.)
●The 1541 disk drive was *far* more common in the United States than it was overseas. I've got two that are still in working order (and two working C64's), and needless to say, I am VERY careful with them.
●If you weren't afraid to modify your hardware, you could even add *more* memory to the disk drive. (It only came with 2 kilobytes of RAM, and half of that was used for disk buffers.)
●Well... not DIRECTLY through the OS. C64 BASIC 2.0 lacked the disk commands that PET BASIC did. You could still open a channel to the drive and send commands to it that way. One of my favorite programs was FastCopy. If you had two 1541 disk drives, all you had to do was configure the drives and then you could disconnect the C64, and the drives could be used to copy unprotected floppies. Great for making backups of all those programs you typed out of magazines. :)

Basically, another way is that it's possible to create a POKE code that runs a mini-program that you create before executing the a program/game on Cassette tape or disk. The most popular way of using POKES is to CHEAT on the game to either skip levels, become God, etc. Yes, us Commodore 64/128 people could have been programming gurus if we kept it up, but the consoles came to our lives. :)

I've checked out most recordings of Gorecki - Symphony No. 3 and I think Zofia Kilanowics and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestras recording is by far the best. Although the media have said that this particular symphony represents World War II and the death of millions of people, Gorecki wanted to represent sorrow, pain and also hope in a more universal level. He didn't restrict it to just one period in History, instead he chose different stories for each movement to he could portray different feelings to resonate in people differently. Gorecki didn't limit himself.

What a beautiful piece of art and music on the VIC-20. I am aware of what the VIC-I's registers can do, but I am baffled by how you were able to accomplish what you did. This demo had to have been programmed at the raster beam level.
